A ruminant deer 

Concealed observes 

A focusing lens 

And steels her nerves. 

The unknown presents 

The curious mind 

An option of flight 

Or clues to be mined. 

Engaging her senses, 

Determine her course - 

Flee the unease 

Or confronting the source. 

Her survival will rest 

On such critical thought, 

Genetically gifted 

Or empirically taught.
